The Red Truth: Why Netflix's Bulbbul Is an Unhurried, Essential Watch | Bulbbul Movie review

Bulbbul: A Dark and slow-Poetic Masterpiece

Hello, everyone! It’s Ritik here, again today I want to talk about a movie that is not going out of my mind.
First of all sorry, it's another movie that made me sorry for not watching it within time, I'm too late but this is next level.

Trust me, this isn't your average horror film. It's a gorgeous, poetic, and somewhat heartbreaking period drama set in 19th-century Bengal, wrapped up in a supernatural mystery. Yes, it’s a slow-burn, but let me tell you, it is a masterpiece in that slowness. Every deliberate minute builds the tension and the tragedy, making the ending hit you like a tonne of bricks.

When I saw Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri, first i thought that it can be something if another Laila Majnu but oh boy!! It has surprises.
What impressed me most were the subtle hints the movie dropped. The director, Anvita Dutt, doesn't rely on cheap jump scares. Instead, she uses the local legend of the chudail (the witch with backward feet) to tell a much, much darker story, the story of what women had to endure.

The True Face of Terror

The real horror in Bulbbul is not some ghost. It is the terror of men, how selfish, evil, and demonic men can become, and the suffocating rules of their patriarchal society. As a man watching it, it was terrifying and truly insightful to see how women were treated not even like animals, but like mere objects whose only purpose was to please the men around them, even from a young age. The film perfectly captures the awful duality of men.
It touches upon every difficult theme: the twisted family dynamics, the love, the hate, the jealousy, the anguish, and the ultimate suffering that was once just an everyday reality

The Star, the Sound & the Art of Suffering & Justice

The whole thing is visually stunning, painted in deep, ominous reds by cinematographer Siddharth Diwan. The music by Amit Trivedi is another top-class element, it makes you feel sad and pity for Bulbbul, but also angry and helpless at the circumstances she faces.
But the absolute showstopper was Tripti Dimri as Bulbbul. OMG, she was amazing!

She takes the character through a massive journey. She shows the innocence of a child bride, the pain of a suffering woman, the enigmatic grace of the Badi Bahu, and the fierce power of the avenger. Her expressive eyes alone convey fear, sadness, and that final, quiet revenge that you feel is less about hate and more about achieving a long-overdue justice. Every actor, including Avinash Tiwary and Rahul Bose, was fantastic in their roles.

The Near Perfect Verdict of Simplicity

Now, here is the only minor thought I had: By dropping all those careful, subtle hints, the story offers you a prediction and that prediction comes true. Usually, I’d want a twist, but in this case, the execution was so great that the simplicity worked.
While the story's core mystery is simple enough for the audience to potentially predict Bulbbul's true identity, this simplicity is actually a strength. The film’s focus is never on who the witch is, but why she was created. The great execution ensures that the emotional journey and the powerful social commentary land perfectly, making the predictable reveal a moment of cathartic, albeit tragic, justice.

It’s a powerful, poetic film that elevates the supernatural genre into something meaningful. For me, Bulbbul is a near-perfect movie.
If you love cinema that has layered storytelling and gives you something deep to think about, you need to stream this.
